Why Do We Store Body Fat?

Body fat are stored as something called triglycerides inside fat cells within our bodies.

And our fat cells are capable of storing extremely large amounts of triglycerides.

The reason for this storage?

Well, so that we have energy readily available if/when there’s less or no food coming in.

A great way to think of your fat storage, is like an energy buffer:

When times are good, and you have food in your belly. Then stored body fat acts like a security buffer.

When there’s absence of food, your body can then tap into your fat storage, and triglycerides can be released in the bloodstream to provide the body with energy needed to survive.

And if you’ve ever heard that you need to be in a caloric deficit to lose body fat, this is the exact process you’re told to go after. You’re essentially looking to reduce your energy coming in, which then forces your body to use its stored fat as fuel.

What Is Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat percentage is the amount of fat stored in your body, compared to everything else. Everything else would be your organs, bones, muscle, tendons, water, and so on.

In other words, body fat percentage is how large your buffer of fat is compared to your total body mass.

Men and women genetically have different body fat percentages. Simply because that’s what nature intended.

For example, a male bodybuilder could be able to force himself down to as low as 3-4 % body fat. While a stage ready female bodybuilder could “only” force herself down to as low as 8-9% body fat:

Same would then be true for other body fat percentage ranges as well. A male athlete could look incredible at around 8-10 % body fat while a female with the same level of athleticism and appearance might be at 18-20 % body fat.
